about

Words translated into Scots (an attempt) from ‘The Cuckoo’ in Folk songs of the Upper Thames, Alfred Williams (1923) (p. 165), a version sung by Elijah Iles, Inglesham, Wilts. I am interested that this song has found relatively little favour in Scotland, but it has been one of the commonest of all lyrics in England, Ireland, and upland America. The first version I heard was an Anne Briggs version, on which the tune is based, but I preferred this version from the Williams book was my favourite as its sticks to exploring the Cuckoo for its own intrigue and does not fall into moralising tales of false love!

about

quinie Glasgow, UK

I am based in Glasgow and explore traditional Scots song. Inspired largely by Scots singers including the repertoire of Lizzie Higgins (1929-1993), I bring together a range of sources and sparse accompaniment.
